Why I Ride:   June 2nd, 2014 was the happiest day of my life: I gave birth to my beautiful son Shane. He was born early, at 33 weeks but, weighed 6 lb 12 oz and appeared otherwise healthy. In less than 24 hours that joy turned to fear as we were told that our son was very sick, in a coma, and needed to be Life Flighted to the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, about an hour south of our home, for care. They determined very quickly that he had a urea cycle disorder and he went immediately into surgery to have a catheter inserted for dialysis. After further testing it was determined that Shane had neonatal onset OTC. After a valiant five day fight, Shane succumbed to his illness. I have since found out that I have OTC as well, although thankfully, asymptomatic. I am riding both to honor Shane's memory and to support the National Urea Cycle Disorders Foundation and the fight to conquer urea cycle disorders in an effort to protect affected children and adults and their families from suffering from this and other urea cycle disorders. This will be my fifth year participating in the Cure the Cycle Challenge.
